Dr Le Métais is an independent consultant focusing on comparative analysis and evaluation
of education policy, implementation and reform and is an honorary research fellow at
Dundee University.
As Head of International Project Development at the National Foundation for Educational Research (1984-2004), Dr Le Métais was responsible for the conceptualisation and development of international and comparative research strategy and for the direction of related research, information and consultancy services. From 1984-97 she was Head of the National Unit for England, Wales and Northern Ireland of EURYDICE, the education information network serving education policy makers throughout the European Union. Between 1996-2004, she devised and directed the International Review of Curriculum and Assessment Frameworks (INCA), an ongoing study of education systems and organisation in (then) 18 countries, and conducted three associated thematic studies on international education values and aims and upper secondary and primary trends. This work has been enriched by curriculum-related projects in over fifteen countries worldwide. She is the author of numerous research-based publications and conference presentations on education policy and provision, the training and management of teachers, and specific aspects of teaching and learning.
Dr Le Métais’ previous work experience includes teaching, school management, local education authority administration, examining, research, and quality assessment in higher education.
A national of the Netherlands, Dr Joanna Le Métais has been educated in the Netherlands, Australia, France and England. She is a qualified teacher and holds a Bachelor of Education, a Master of Arts (Public and Social Administration) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Conservative values and education policy 1979-1990). In 2000, she was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Education honoris causa by Brunel University. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Linguists, was a member of its Council from 1987-1990 and served as Council Chairperson from 1988-1990.
